There is a useful new online library resource available at Dal: Theatre in Video, which hosts a number of film or TV productions of famous plays. The films date mostly from between the 1950s and the 80s, so some are a little creaky, but they might be useful aids when you’re studying plays.

One of the films is a 1984 BBC TV film of Antigone, starring Juliet Stevenson as Antigone, and featuring Sir John Gielgud as Tiresias. It’s not a bad film; the acting is strong, and it presents a full text, including the Chorus, who speak a lot of their lines in unison.  The acting is naturalistic and the costumes are semi-modern so it won’t tell you much about Ancient Greek stagecraft, but it does help give life to the play.

You can access Theatre in Video from the ‘databases’ section of the library’s website.
